Chapter Eleven

AFTER DINNER, MASON holed up in his room and reviewed the documents for a deal in San Diego that could be even more lucrative than the project in Dubai. From down the hall, he heard the sound of chatter and laughter as Kayla and Louise shared quality time with their brother for the first time since he’d left for the Marines.

Guilt nipped at Mason’s conscience, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t shake the sensation. Why should he feel bad when the family would be richly compensated for the deed to their property?

Because the farm is like a member of their family, said the nagging voice inside his head.

He tried again but couldn’t force the thought from his mind. A week on the farm had shown him just how much it meant to Kayla. This was more than just a piece of property to her. It was her life, her memories, and her family’s history. And while money could buy another plot of land, maybe even a better one, she’d be losing a piece of what had shaped her into the woman she’d become.

Around eleven, after finally finishing his work, he powered up his phone and called his brother.

“Kind of late to be calling, Farmer Falco,” Shane said when he answered.

Mason ignored the dig. He wouldn’t have called if he thought it was too late, and experience had taught him that Shane never went to bed until at least two in the morning. “I need you to run a cost analysis.”

“Sure. What for?”

“The Whispering Oaks project. I want to know the estimated profitability if we revise the plans to exclude the Phillips property.”

Silence. “You can’t be serious.”

“I wouldn’t be asking if I wasn’t,” Mason replied, putting a little extra don’t-fuck-with-me into his voice. “How soon can you get me the results?”

Shane huffed on the other end of the line. Even as a kid, he’d never been the type to handle change very well. “Do you have any idea how difficult it is to switch gears this late in the game? I can tell you right now it won’t be profitable. That parcel was earmarked for commercial development. If we make any changes to the blueprints at this point, we risk defaulting on the contracts we’ve already signed.”

He had a feeling Shane was going to say that. But he’d run into this type of situation in the past, most recently with a Baptist church who refused to relocate their parish. To play hardball would have invited a ton of bad press, and in the end, they’d worked around the parcel and still managed to keep the project in the black.

“In that case, factor renegotiations into the costs. I’ve done business with most of the companies involved, so we shouldn’t have to make too many concessions. Tell the designers to shift the commercial parcels to the eastern side and make the residential lots a little smaller to compensate for the loss of acreage.”

The sound of keyboard typing came over the line.
